It's remnants of European imperialism that whats in "west" and whats in "east" is defined by their direction from Europe.
But as world is round what's in east also can be found from going west...so terms like "far-east" doesnt make sense...for americans "far east" would be "close west"

The center of the map depends on what country made the map. East west language usage is also an english term.. People from the middle east dont describe it as the mid east except when they are translating it to english or for western peoples.
