'I, Robot' is nearly here.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17302657

"Britain's Engineered Arts' singing "Robothespian" attracted attention for its rendition of Singing in the Rain and Star Wars impersonations.

The android is being marketed as an educational guide. Its developers now plan to link up the machines' brains via the cloud so they can share information between each other."

Also ->

"The Karlsruhe Institute's Armar robot offered a vision of the future in which domestic droids carry out chores.

The machine's grip is sensitive enough to allow it to take milk and cartons of juice out of a fridge, and it can learn how to clean or empty a dishwasher by watching its owner."

Very interesting article outlining just some of the latest tech.

What WILL become very critical to support years-long space travel is the advent of truly flexible, self-powered/easilly fuelled robot forms AND BCI technology ( http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2266812/ ).

Implanting radiation-shielded brains into robot forms would be one answer. It probably isn't impossible to 'cut away' those portions of the brain that drive negative activities, eg, sex, agression, religious whackoism, etc.

The self-teaching robot brain is a little scary - 'Borg' time.
