I'm guessing many of you have seen the movie (TV miniseries) made out of this book, but I'm not sure how many of you might have read the actual book.

My father read it years before it was a miniseries and recommended it to me. I never got around to reading it but I watch the miniseries once every year or so.

The book is FANTASTIC and provides much in the way of detail and added pleasant story that was, by necessity, not a part of the cinematic production.

I find it impossible to think of the characters in the book as any other than the actors that were cast in the roles for the miniseries.

Anyway, for what it's worth, I cannot recommend this book more highly to anyone even vaguely interested in the American West of the 19th century.

I have read a few of mc murtry's books. Gus is a role model for certain behavior. You just have to ask yourself: What would Gus do and you have your answer?

For that matter, so are Col and Deets.

Whenever I am asked what my favorite novel is, this one almost always comes to mind. I agree 100%. As an aside, I have read all of his books and, while they do not come close to the brilliance that is Lonesome Dove (he won the Pulitzer for it, by the way), they are all highly entertaining and recommended.
