My father read it years before it was a miniseries and recommended it to me. I never got around to reading it but I watch the miniseries once every year or so.
The book is FANTASTIC and provides much in the way of detail and added pleasant story that was, by necessity, not a part of the cinematic production.
I find it impossible to think of the characters in the book as any other than the actors that were cast in the roles for the miniseries.
Anyway, for what it's worth, I cannot recommend this book more highly to anyone even vaguely interested in the American West of the 19th century.
