How do you Combine Books ?

There are some journals and also books that I need for a Traldor's staff. Do you have to combine them or just have them when they are required by the npc ?
How do you combine them if that's required ?

on the scroll - drag the icon at the bottom to your hot bar -and click it
will combine any like scrolls or make a book if all three are in your inventory
EDIT sorry -- yes you need all three combined into a book to turn in to that arty's artificer

Or right click one of them and type "/use"
