Hello all,

I have never played daoc before and figured I am so sick of the current games maybe trying to go back in time I may find a game that will keep my interest. I guess I was hoping for some suggestions on where would be a good place to start. I love the idea of 3 realms and from what I have read the pvp is unrivaled. I have always played casters but I think I might give a tank class a try or maybe even try my hand at a stealther. Any feedback is most welcome! Also I was reading I may need 2 accounts for buffs? I have never heard of sucha thing but could be interesting.

Thanks!

Welcome aboard.
Stealthers... Albs have the best, least liked, but best archers in the game, Mid is the next, and hib
has the worst. As for plain, death by blade. Its Hib all the way.

As a Mage, there's a ton to choose from. Wizards with Fireballs, or Ice, some go Earth too.
Runemasters, that have lots of utility, and speed as well. Bonedanders, Warlocks, Spirtmasters, Enchanters, Eldridge
and the list goes on and on.

The game has some really great pure fighter classes as well.. Warriors, Heros and Pally's are just some.

Its really up to you, but, welcome to the game.

As for buffs.. If you want to be on par with everyone else, and you have no friends in the game, a 'bot' account
will make it easier. However, if you're playing with friends, and they've been in the game, you can bum buffs
from them.. Then, there's the realm buffer in the frontier. If you don't want to pay for a 2nd account, this
is another option. Sure, they're not at strong, but, they do OK.

Join a guild, most are very helpful, and can help you level you're toon quickly to get you on the battlefield.
Gear is an important part as well, and most guilds will have someone handy that can help in that department as well.
Money, is easy to get, if you know where to look. Housing is great if you need that 'something'.

Just a quick reminder. Do not create your char. on Ywain1.. I'd do something like 6 or 9, as those seem to be
less populated. However, all 10 Ywain's are linked together. So, it doesn't matter which you pick..
The only thing that does matter, if you're interested, is housing, and getting a good place to put your house.

Welcome to DAoC. If you've always played casters, I'd go the same route to start off here for the sake of familiarity. I'd also look at Albion as a place to start, mainly because prices for high end gear tends to be a little cheaper. Most people relic hop so population is always going to swing a little bit, but alb is really an easy place to start. As for classes, I'd look heavily at the sorcerer. First, the class can do a little bit of everything as far as playstyle goes. They have good support, functions, speed, pets, and self heals and good dps via lifetap...so you're wanted in all groups, you can small man, or solo if you wish.

As far as tanks go, I'd look at the heavy tanks from each realm first: Hero, Warrior, Armsman. All of them are very solid classes and wanted in groups, can solo and have a pretty easy learning curve.

I'd avoid stealthers as a first class to learn the game with. To play effectively, they are the toughest classes out there to master, and if you haven't mastered them they are complete fodder. It's better to learn the game mechanics first THEN transition into a stealther. Just my thoughts

Take your time with this game.. The community is not quite what it used to be so absorb everything you can learn from your own experience, and take as much as you can from helpful people on here.

Unlike some of the newer games that have come out.. this game has been around close to a decade, and the die hard players have all earned their ranks, and you have a LOT of catching up to do. My advice is to not hurry to 50.. take your time in the battlegrounds and play several characters on different realms to lvl 35 or so and find one that suits you well. Then stick with that character. Cap out of all of the BG's so you will have as much rank as you possibly can when it comes time to face the vets. Once you're 50 run with the zerg until you hit realm rank 5 and have a solid understanding of your character.. at that point decide if you want to solo or group play or continue playing with the large scale warfare groups. If you solo or group play (8v8) You'll probably need a second account for buffs. But running with the zerg you can usually get away with getting buffs from your group or someone in the zerg.

Templating is somewhat of a mini game within this game (at least to me). You can either try to piece together a template someone else has made on here, or slowly learn how to template your own character through trial and error. I enjoy templating and I have always made my own templates for all of my characters, and in a sense it helps you learn some of the mechanics of the game.

You are correct this game has unrivaled PvP.. I have played a ton of different newer games, and have ALWAYS come back to DAoC. Partly because of the shear amount of items/levels/characters I have accumulated over the years, and partly because in my opinion no other game to date provides the "fun factor" this game yields on a daily basis. If you're looking for a visually stunning game.. venture elsewhere, but if you want a solid pvp game that has action 24/7 this is IT. I plan on coming back to the game in the next few weeks (Just had a baby boy :]).. I can probably help you out with some basics, and show you around the realm of your choice.

Hope this helps some and..
Good Luck!

Regardless the realm you choose, be sure to get the "Saving Zarees" quest when you are level 7-10. You will need to port out of the starter tutorial zone to get it. It can be found in Mag Mell, Mularn or Cotswald depending on the realm you are in. It gives you a helm that allows you to port from where ever you may be in a PvE zone back to civilization with no reuse timer. It may not seem important at the lower levels, but you will find it invaluable at the upper levels.

There are as well some classes for "newbies" that are nice to play and quite easy when understood.

for albion you got for example the friar or heretic... Friars are mele/supporters when skilled in the right way have all (but one) needed buffs for them selves, are quite easy to level.

Heretics are nice allround chars... skilled in a certain way they get all but one buff for themselfs, they can cast and do mele damage, heal etc...

if you want to start in midgard, you can try out a runemaster or spiritmaster. the spiritmaster is in my opinion nicer to play because of your companion.

in hibernia you can start with a vampyr... they are nice classes to level and farm... but very high on the costs for playing because your a full mele getting stronger the longer you figth due to selfbuffs.

Each realm has as well their farming classes... I for example try to have 1-2 farming chars to get stuff and earn money with...

DAoC may be an old game, the gfx is not as bling bling as the newly released games, but it's nice to see and gives fun for all kinds of playstyle... pve, rvr, crafting, goofing around in the chats, farming stuff, getting a house and move in make it a nice place for your toons to live in.

Heretics own, play one.

Uninterruptable 'channeled' damage spell that increases in damage every time it ticks, crazy survivability, slam, heals, self buffs, OP Flex styles etc.

Hey, first of all welcome to daoc. I think mages are the best approach to this game. I hate to say this, but for battlegrounds midgard casters are easy to play without the need of buffs (Bonedancers and warlocks, though the latter isn't much liked by anyone else). I ran both botless, using potions and was able to hold my own (I only played them because I didn't have access to a bot account).

However, in the battlegrounds (during peak times), there are lots of players on, many which will lend you their own buffs. So if you plan to group, then don't worry about buffs too much. The realm buffers are located in most of the RvR areas.

As far as classes go in other realms:
Albion: Choose Theurgist or Heretic. Both can find groups and they have a lot of utility. While sorcerers are highly desired, they require a bit of experience to play well. Heretics are also loved in PvE raids, like Master level 10.

Hibernia: ??? My guess might be enchanter, because of the many different pets you get. Focus shield pets for mana chanter. A vampiir might be fun too as they do not require buffs at all.

If you decide to go on Albion, look me up (Pliny), and I can help you out with gear, items, or even some power leveling. Good luck and hope to see you in game!

The bolded is not necessarily true. Body spec sorcs are pretty easy to play; you just have to make sure your group knows you are new to the game and can't be counted on as more then DPS. The advantage is, that after you get a good feel for the game, you have a great group friendly class already leveled, templated and desirable with some realm ranks on it. Hell, I am probably the worst sorc in the game and managed to get rr9.
