i am returning to the game after about 3 years. what is a busy server i can xfer to?

You could try ywain, or ywain, or my personal choice, ywain.
That's right, down to 1 server these days.

Well there's also Gaheris if you want pve, or Mordred if you don't enjoy having people to fight...or group with...or talk to.

Basically you have Ywain1-Ywain10, it is only an issue regarding housing these days. So, if you selected Ywain3, and you wanted a house, it would have to be on Ywain3. Other than that, you and all Ywain people Y1-Y10 are in the same game, same server. Hope that made sense.
EDIT TO ADD: I would probably avoid Ywain1, because the housing for this particular ywain is probably full or darn close to it.

yea i get it, thanks for the response. but what is the difference between the pvp server and regular?

Well on Mordred, the PvP server, you could double the average population. (OK maybe it would go from 2 to 3).
Regarding Ywain there is no difference; Ywain 1 is the same as Ywain 2 is the same as ....
There is only 1 server.
The numbers are a historical legacy to "help" people organise their characters (and houses as mentioned above etc.)
when they "merged" the old servers.

to properly answer the question of what is the difrence...
is ywain being a normal rvr server... you have a "safe" home realm to pve in, then you go out to the battlegrounds, darkness falls, frontiers, or labby to PvP
on Mordred, the PvP server... there is no safe are to pve... people from any realm can travel around to any other realm so PvP is pretty much everywhere...
