I left DAoC when ToA came out. I tried the Classic servers when they came out, but the pop was too low to get a dragon raid going except on Sat. nights, so I gave up on that. I am now sick enough of WoW to come back to DAoC, even if I have to swallow ToA, but of course I am a complete ToA noob. I am also a template noob, since I never actually created a template for myself, even in the old days.

My problem is terminology. I am shopping for a template now on DAOC-templates.com, but the listings shown are greek to me. I see things like "ToA bonus 7/10/10". Also, I don't know how much extra stat can be added via items that raise the stat cap...

Is there a "Template 101" doc/FAQ/Primer out there? I would also love to find a similar introductory doc for ToA. I have gone back through my old DAoC bookmarks, and 95% of them are dead now. Happily, good ole VN is still cranking. Can someone help me out please ?

Thanks!!!

Your best bet is to download a spellcrafting calculator.

Kort's is a good one. http://kscraft.sourceforge.net/

Also checking the class forums is a good way to find templates or at least get some ideas of items to use and what bonuses are important to prioritize for your class/spec. You can get +26 to a stat cap. ToA stats like %dmg or casting speed/range are capped at 10%. Others like duration and buff bonus are 25%. The SC calc will show you what the caps are for specific stats/bonuses.

Here is a quick summary:
Old item bonus maximum from template used to be +75.
ToA added stat caps, which increased the maximum item bonus by your level/2+1.
In other words, at level 50, your maximum item bonus possible is 101.

The main ToA bonuses are the three melee bonuses, and the four spell bonuses.
Melee Damage
Style Damage
Melee Speed.

When you see this expressed as 10/10/7 it almost always means melee/style/speed where
melee based toons are concerned.

For casters it is usually expressed like this: 10/10/10/10
representing the following:
Spell Damage
Spell Range
Casting Speed
Resist Pierce

All of the above ToA bonuses are capped at 10% for the most part
(some classes receive unintended bonuses to resist pierce above 10%).

There are other ToA bonuses, but the above are the core bonuses you'll see in every template.
Other bonuses such as Duration, power pool, healing bonus, enhancement bonus etc. are self explanatory, and are capped at level/2.

Hope that helps a little!
