So i remember like 7 years ago when the VN search engine actually worked... is it still broken or am i doing it wrong?

Just use Google advanced search. At the bottom of the advanced search page you can enter the URL of the site you want searched ("Search within a site or domain"  . To search the general board just enter the url of the VN board and the search only looks for matches on VN.
http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en
( Example for the URL of the general board: http://vnboards.ign.com/daoc_general_board/b5176 )
