I recently returned to DAoC after several years also. The one thing that surprised me is the difference in difficulty in raising cash in the 3 realms. In Alb, you just go to Avalon City and kill the mobs there. It is very easy to get to (no aggro), the city is laid out well, and the mobs have very small aggro radii. It is literally like a bank with unlimited withdrawals. My 50 Scout, untemped, solo, and buffed with pots or CL buffs, is able to chain-kill the yellow/oj/red mobs non-stop (req. an Invig pot, of course), and can easily farm 200-300 scales in a casual evening. I just walk up to the mobs until their nametag appears, hit them with 3 PBs, and 90% of them drop dead at my feet - the few I have to melee die easily. What is even easier about AC is that a lot of the mobs are archers, and once you shoot them, instead of charging you, they pull out a bow and try to shoot you with it, of course they never get a shot off and are quickly dead. It is actually kind of funny...
The other big cash-maker in Alb is the DTF quest, which with two Sojourners is shamefully easy to run over and over (I read some patch notes that said it was being nerfed to a max of 15 reps, but this clearly is not the case at present). This is a great way to farm CL xp and cash at the same time.
Also, the Stolen Supplies is good cash, esp. when paired with DTF, but you pretty much have to be a stealther to run it, at least with any efficiency.
The Hib equiv of AC is waaaaay harder to farm - the mobs are laid out very poorly, they aggro way easier, and hit a *lot* harder. No way I could see to make a fraction of the cash there - solo - that I can make at AC (I have a 50 archer in every realm, btw).
I have never made it to Trollheim, the Mid equiv of AC. I've tried 3 times, and each time this giant griffon (I forget the name) swoops down out of the sky and carries me off to the top of a mountain and kills me. It is an epic mob, and I can't even come close to soloing it. I have tried to research this a bit, and basically it is hard even for a group to kill it, because it picks one person and carries them away. Methinks the Mythic programmers had a pretty sadistic sense of humor....
The Mid equiv of DTF (MTI ?) has a much longer run, and it seems like I remember the mobs were aggro, or there were aggro mobs in the area. Anyway, it is *much* harder to run efficiently than DTF, plus you can't run Supplies in the same loop (if you are solo), like you can in Alb.
All in all, I find these differences between the realms to be shameful. But if you are an Alb, no problem making all the gold you will need solo. The scales from AC sell quickly, for 10-15g each, depending on the day's market, and even if you need glass, it is quicker to farm scales, sell them, and buy glass than it is to farm glass solo.
Just my two copper....
P.S. The other way to make gold, a *lot* of it, is to go on ML10 raids. I had top roll on my very first ML10 and snagged a Blade of Illusions, which sold overnight off my CM for 149g. That pretty much ended my need for cash for the time being. And you can get nice items for your template from ML10 as well...I got the chest for my Mins there.
P.P.S. Get a house/porch/CM as soon as you can. I have made some nice plat over the last 4 months just selling the crap drops I get while farming. I even sell the tinder boxes for a gold, and people buy them....sheesh!!!
