I just signed up for the free 14 day trial. I transferred all of my chars off of the archived servers and stepped into NF. I see nothing but buff bots lined up against the wall. I assume they now allow buffs to reach all over Frontiers. A few questions before I actually put down $15 a month for this old game.
1) Is it a must to have 2 accounts active just to compete in the Frontiers? No.
2) Are 8 mans still running strong Yes.
, or is it down to just 1 or 2 set groups that won't take any new comers?3) If the answer to #1 is a yes, is it really worth coming back after so long, paying $30 a month and tons of time, just to catch up?
Mythic has created buffing NPCs that do a good job. Players can compete without a bot. Bots do give slightly better buffs than the NPC buffer but the NPC buffer is ok. Also, bots give other advantages when PLing, when farming plat, etc. . . but it is not as necessary to have a bot as it once was.

Only way you'll need a second account at this rate is if you don't like transfering plat through other people.
One reason that many players have a home is to be able to transfer items and gold/plat without needed another account. If the OP has old toons (level 50s) that were transferred over, it should not be difficult for the OP to obtain the few plat needed to purchase a lot (300Gold), purchase a small home (1 Plat) and purchase a vault (1 Plat) that can be used to transfer items and transfer plat (transfer plat by purchasing household items, place the items in a home vault, have the alt remove the item from the vault and have the alt sell back the item to the NPC for 100% of the purchase price).
The other way to transfer gold/plat is to create a temp/free trial account and use that free trial account to transfer gold/plat.
