what could possibly be interesting about the making of a paining?
was there drama?
was there a bloody fist fight between the people choosing the shade of blue to make the kobolds?

seriously.
come on.

please.
no more placebos.

Well I really enjoyed it. But I'm an artist myself and I enjoy watching 'making of' vids, so perhaps I'm biased.

Considering that the artist, Erik Polak, wasn't that familiar with the game (having mostly worked on Warhammer) I think he did a good job. However, it would be interesting to see what an artist who actually plays the game might come have up with, I think there would be some interesting twists. After all, no-one in the artwork is stunned, mezzed, rooted, nearsighted or zerged by pets ....

Also it's interesting to see that the original artwork is ultra wide screen and that a large amount has been cropped out for the version they published on the web site and are using for the lithographs. It's a shame to lose so much of the painting, I'd really like to see a full width version.

now THAT would be something better.

these ppl arent even fighting each other on that picture.
its just races/classes with some spell effects.
it would be much different if they were fighting each other.

it would also be interesting in the making of for that when the guy said what fights hes been in to draw his inspiration.

Well, the artist admits in the video that he hasn't played the game much (if at all) as he worked mostly on Warhammer. So they provided him with guidance, screenshots etc to work on. Of course, a professional artist can produce good results without needing to actually use the product being portrayed, as long as the brief is good enough. But I can't help but feel the end result lacks a little connection with the player base as a result. It is a very nice piece of artwork, but does it truly represent how players percieve and experience the game? Perhaps not. I wonder why they didn't open this up as a fan art contest, I'm sure there's quite a few players, current and past, who might have enjoyed having a crack at it. I know I probably would have.

I asked (via both FB and feedback form) for a playerbase challenge to be done with both the new shirts and a "fan art" section of the herald, but was never responded to

an example:

new cool shirts?

Contest! players submit their art, players vote on best, winners get their art put on the official DAOC shirt.

as for the fan art on the herald.. that would be just super.

I can think of at least 3 or 4 of us players that do some pretty great work and would love to see it be shown on the herald

***edit** 3 or 4 of us being those that have posted their paintings / art / whatever up on the vn for critique and such, I know of several other players who are phenomenal artists.. but dont post their work on vn
