Top gear nowadays?

I haven't played since 2005 but I had a heavily twinked minstrel, theurgist, and buff bot. I quit a bit after Darkness Rising came out so not quite long enough to get to champion level 5 (I know there are 10 now). I decided to check the game out again since I had the free returning player thing going on, got set up, heading to the frontiers with my theurgist and got one shotting by a freakin' void Eld's bolt immediately after stepping out of the keep gate. I thought, "Ok, that could be a fluke and my minstrel is tougher. Let me try him." I run into a stealth zerg first, which is okay, but after dying quickly I noticed that the hunter hit me for just over 1k (while I was moving with speed one). I thought, okay, archers must have been buffed up at some point, lets move on. I run around for a bit and and suddenly have a skald chasing me down outta nowhere. I turn to fight and nearly get one shotted.
So, has some exponentially better gear been introduced that makes ToA gear totally obsolete now? Both my toons have like 6-7 fully leveled artis, rare drops from ToA, and SC'd to fit the gaps; how are they able to turn to dust when other players merely glance in their direction? My minstrel is even RR6. This isn't a rhetorical question meant to be read as a complaint either, I actually want to know. If the gear isn't too hard to get, I may just come back, do a little more PvE, and get into the action again.
Also, along the same lines, how difficult is it to gear up from scratch? As I understand, you can get from 1-50 in like 2 days now (crazy) but does it still take like 5-7 days /played to get geared up after that? I keep seeing all these weird posts about artifact trade-ins and all sorts of other things I don't understand but it makes it sound like they may have made it really easy to get gear that used to take hours upon hours to obtain. Any info or links to info of this sort?

Templates have come a long way since ToA days. It's a lot easier now to get maxed everything, hits, resists, all the goodies.
I can only guess that your toons have low hits. The theurg being one shot was probably a lucky crit on the elds part.
As for the skald, probably the same thing, if you got low hits a big crit can reaaaally hurt, but so can a non crit hit with 2 instant DDs. Skalds are mean.
It's not too hard to get up to speed tho. A few nights doing Glass Quests and dragon scale quests and you can pull off a decent enough template to not get one shotted. Just remember some of those players have been playing for years. Their reaction time and knowledge plays a big factor in RvR.
900 scales will get you a complete set of slayer armor. I'd start there first. Then you can go further from there and buy dragon drop jewelry. Dragon templates are still quite viable in todays game.
Top dog gear is ML10 Astral Gear. Good stats, procs, and /uses. Some of the new Summoner's Hall stuff isn't too shabby either.
ToA gear hasn't lost all of it's good stuff, but dang near close. Using a lot of it leaves huge gaps in your templates. I only find myself using 1-3 arties avg on my templates.
I always find it hard myself after a month or two break from daoc to come back and compete on the level some players do. I would suggest spending some time on a lvl 49.5 toon in cathal valley, or any BG really, just to re-familiarize yourself. Or zerg surf, albs run plenty of them.

That's a naive suggestion. As much as I'd like to believe that skill can overcome an enemies ability to one shot someone, it's just not true. I'm sure you run around with all your stats half capped and are able to take down small groups of RR10 enemies solo but the rest of us mortals need to be on a somewhat equal playing field before skill becomes the determining factor.

Yes, it's actually on the same link as the glass quests. It's the ones in NF, just below the glass quest list, though looking at it now it doesn't specifically say that it supplies scales. But theres a few quests you can pickup for the time being.

Yeah, made 10k scales in 4 hours doing the supply line quest. When we have crim port its over the top. But yeah, the guy at CS in NF. 200scales a turn in and 500glass.
