That's easy.

If you have ANY anti-virus running, with the exception of AVG, you must UNINSTALL it. Not simply disable, but uninstall it.

AVG is the only one that AC likes.

I have the 64x version of Vista and that is how I got it to run on my machine.

That is the most ridiculous suggestion I've ever seen. To anyone reading this, don't actually do this.

AC will work fine on Vista provided you either:

* do not install into program files (C:\Games or similar is popular) or

* enable write access to the AC install directory for your specific user account

To avoid the hammering from your antivirus scanning writes to Portal.dat and Cell.dat, you can whitelist either AC or the folder it's in. The suggestion that you "must have AVG" is completely false (and indeed I'd rather have no antivirus than AVG, personally)

To each his/her own.

And how do you "white list" the files so AC will accept it.

Personally, having no anti virus these days is a risk, but once again, that is your choice.

Pretty much every Anti-Virus program I've seen has a way to add "Exceptions" to their scanning rules.

Some of them you have to add the Exception to both the Real-Time Protection AND the Scheduled Scans. But you should be able to add Exceptions.

Some people choose to only add Exceptions for specific files like cell.dat, portal.dat, and acclient.exe. Other people choose to just allow an exception on the whole folder so nothing inside of the AC folder is scanned at any time. If you do that, make sure you do not download or run anything for Decal or otherwise from that folder directly.

Very interesting Drakkier.

Are these Vista suggestions in a sticky (could have missed it)?? I honestly wish I had known this information when I was installing AC

Indeed. But I use NOD32, and it does in fact work - which is why I strongly disagree with your statement that you "must" have AVG.

and that is good. I am just repeating information I was given VIA these boards and the SC boards as well. If it does run on other anti virus platforms, GOOD. I just may reload the one I had to delete. For me this is good news. It seems I have made a mistake and now that I have been corrected, I will no longer give out erroneous information.

I use NOD32 as well and have mine configured with Exceptions on the World of Warcraft and Asheron's Call folders.

Yeah, with games like MMOs it's always good to create an exception for them or they run like dogs (especially FFXI, which loads the entire game into a monolithic 800MB executable and STILL has to access the hard disk!) I've got exceptions set on AC, AO, FFXI, LotRO, and WoW because it'd be intolerably hard to play otherwise.
