Ever since i started playing this game in the summer 2000, the game's patches were always downloading at less than 56k speed.
No matter what type of connection/anti-virus/firewall i had or did not have.
I am patching right now. Taking forever and i got 15mbit connection o_O
Enlighten me!

seems like its always been a super slow DL.
not sure on the specifics but i think you're right.
i get out my 9600 baud rate modem when i want to DL the new patches  |

FWIW, I was downloading them at 1MB/sec back in the day (yes, I was on a 10Mbit connection since 2000) - from Finland. It was not uncommon for me to be among the first online after a patch.
I only managed this once, tho:

Not long after retail, Turbine began to limit the speed of being able to update to a particular speed.
That throttling still exists (as far as I am aware). Even with a better connection on their end, faster servers, fewer players and players with better connections.
