closes accounts without telling you, or even sending a piece of paper saying "Oh, by the way, we have closed your account."

Actually in NJ if you do not touch an account for only 3 years, the government comes in and declares it dormant and takes the money.
Yes they make ONE attempt to contact you... Usually first class mail and non-descript in the hope that it gets lost or ignored.
