The issue for many people is gradual versus abrupt corruption. As human beings we want the corruption of ourselves or our beliefs to happen at a pace that we don't notice. New ideas corrupt us too quickly and so they often get rejected outright at first. If we are slowly indoctrinated to those new ideas then they don't seem as corrupting and so we allow some of them eventually.
For an example of this, consider your grandparents' generation compared to yours, especially if you share the same religion. What would they have considered inappropriate in their time that you now consider mainstream and acceptable? If your views were suddenly projected back during their times how would they have been received? What about your grandparents' grandparents generation?
Over time we accept things that we would have never accepted if we had to take them all at once. Consider how the idea of evolution was initially taken by the religious community. Because it included a transition from animal to man the entire concept was considered "wrong" by most of the religious community (and some even considered it blasphemy). Today, much of the religious community is fine with the idea of life adapting and changing over time as long as you leave the "ape to man" part out.
