Either way our hotel occupancy is way up which is indicative of an improving economy.

Hawaii hotels enjoyed higher occupancy last week compared to a year ago while average room rates rose nearly 8 percent statewide, according to a report by Hospitality Advisors LLC and Smith Travel Research .

The statewide occupancy rate during the week ending Jan. 21 was 82.4 percent, 3.9 percentage points higher than the same week a year ago. The average daily room rate of $202.08 was 7.9 percent higher than the same week in 2011.

Oahu saw the greatest gain in room rates, with the average daily room rate rising 11 percent to $179.21. The occupancy rate for Oahu hotels, the majority of which are in Waikiki, was 89.6 percent, 4.2 percentage points higher than a year ago.

Maui’s hotel occupancy rate was 82.8 percent, 4.6 percentage points higher than last year, while the average daily room rate of $260.76 was 8.9 percent higher than in 2011.

The Big Island’s 67.5 percent occupancy rate was an improvement of 1.2 percentage points from last year, while the average daily room rate was $189.28, slightly less than 1 percent higher than last year.

Kauai hotels were 64.1 percent occupied last week, 3.6 percentage points higher than last year, but the average daily room rate of $200.14 was 4.5 percent lower than last year.

That's promising info on an international scale. I'm not sure you can say that's because of the American economy getting better. Either way it's good for Hawaii's economy.
