I am utterly unable to win that footrace on the first map (the challenge) -- I lose at just past the point where he runs out of armor and is at full health.... Currently level 12 with him level 9 -- yes I am spec'd mostly for defense but there doesnt seem to be a way to change that.

Any hints or is he impossible the way I am set up?

Made it to the second map -- Spent over 20 literal minutes on the first battle and he cant damage me and I cant defeat it. It heals at half a red bar to 80% of a red bar and then I take it down to 50% and it heals to 80% forever.
Looks like I need to reset my savefile and start over from the beginning unfortunately.
Yep that is it -- I decided to play the first few boards and reset to see what stats do. Strength seems to affect the damage done quite dramatically and the damage from the first spell a lot and the damage from the second spell slightly. Magic seems to increase the second spell but not the first spell much. Speed seems to do nothing at least from 10 to 22.
